Amazons Crossover Review, DC Fandome 2021
As important as Wonder woman appeared to be at DC’s mark, it’s only recently that she was truly allowed to gain the attention that her fellow Trinity members Batman and Superman have. These two have their own wide and wide crossover events every year, but Diana hasn’t had one for herself since the early 1990s. Fortunately, that will change in 2022 with Trial of the Amazons.
The next crossover has been announced at DC Fandome and will be “a power struggle that will redefine the future of DC’s Amazons.” In the comics, the Island of Women Warriors has seen several changes recently. Diana has walked through various afterlife hoping that each jump will be the next home. She only recently came home, and IIn her place, her mother Hippolyta has taken over the new Wonder Woman from the Justice League, while Nubia is the new Queen of Themyscira. The three women will play a key role in the event, with Artemis and Current (and eventual) Wonder Girl Wonder woman) Yara Flor.
Trial will be written by the authors of the current Wonder Woman books: Becky Cloonan and Michael Conrad, the directors of the main book; Stephanie Williams and Vita Ayala to head next week Nubia and the Amazons mini-series; Joëlle Jones, writer of Wonder girl; and Wonder Woman: Adventures of Young Diana Jordie Bellaire. The foundation of the crossover will be set up in Nubia before starting in earnest next year.
Sure, Trial is billed as something that will change the future of this corner of the DC Universe, but it’s good that Diana and her supporting cast are brought to the forefront. As an extended celebration of the character’s 80th birthday, I hope he lives up to the hype and opens up new stories with these characters. Who knows, maybe this will bring us closer to a possible video game.
Wonder Woman: Trial of the Amazons starts in 2022.
