Bangladesh’s Deputy High Commission in Kolkata is set to become the country’s first diplomatic mission to India to outsource visa services.

The visa service will start this month but the exact date has not yet been confirmed, reports our correspondent in New Delhi.

However, visa service will continue to be issued by Bangladesh Missions in other Indian cities – New Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Agartala and Guwahati.

Of all Bangladesh diplomatic missions around the world, the Deputy High Commission in Calcutta issues the highest number of visas – an average of 15,000 (before Covid-19) per month, a figure that rises from 20,000 to 22,000 during the Durga Puja, the sources told the Daily Star.

One of the reasons for visa outsourcing, they said, is to avoid congestion at the Deputy High Commission in Kolkata’s Park Circus district.

The rush of visa applicants is creating traffic jams on the road where the mission is located, the sources say.

A number of diplomatic missions from other countries in Calcutta have already outsourced their visa centers and the Deputy High Commission of Bangladesh will be the latest to come on that list.
