Foreign Ministry Asian Affairs Department Director General Liu Jinsong meets Cambodian Ambassador to China Khek Caimealy Sysoda
On September 16, 2021, the Director General of the Asian Affairs Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Liu Jinsong met Cambodia’s Ambassador to China Khek Caimealy Sysoda. The two sides exchanged views on Sino-Cambodia relations and international and regional issues of mutual concern.
Liu Jinsong said China and Cambodia have a long-standing friendship. In a classic Chinese novel, The Dream of the Red Room, a girl from the “Zhenzhen Empire” writes a Chinese poem: “How can I not regret the beautiful spring of southern China? Later, scholars confirmed that the “Zhenzhen Empire” referred to Chenla (or Khmer), the name of ancient Cambodia. I knew former King Norodom Sihanouk when I was little. I still remember the newscast showing busy streets lined up by Chinese people welcoming the visit of the former king. As the Cambodian sayings say, “we will surely reach out to our true friend” and “once we become friends our friendship will last forever”. China is a sincere and permanent friend of Cambodia and other neighboring countries in Asia. China has always treated these countries on an equal footing with mutual assistance, and has attached great importance to friendship and trust.
Liu Jinsong said that last year, President Xi Jinping met King Norodom Sihamoni and Queen Mother Monineath and awarded him the “Friendship Medal”. This shows that President Xi Jinping attaches great importance to the Cambodian royal family and, more specifically, shows the strategic and unique importance of Sino-Cambodian relations. State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi has just finished his visit to Cambodia. During the visit, he pointed out that China and Cambodia are good friends with a high level of mutual trust and a community of destiny through thick and thin. China will continue to strongly support Cambodia in safeguarding state sovereignty and national dignity, in combating the pandemic, in developing its economy and in its more active and vital role in international arenas and regional. China is willing to work with Cambodia to implement the important consensus reached between the leaders of the two countries, continue to work closely on combating COVID-19 and development cooperation, accelerate high-level cooperation Belt and Road quality and promote key cooperation projects. . China will fully support Cambodia to assume the ASEAN presidency next year and work with Cambodia to further advance China-ASEAN relations.
Khek Caimealy Sysoda said that Zhou Daguan, a Chinese envoy from the Yuan Dynasty, stayed in Cambodia for a long time and wrote a book, The Customs of Cambodia, an important document for the studies of Cambodian history. Sihanohkville was a major port on the ancient Silk Sea Route. The Cambodia-China friendship built and carefully nurtured by former King Norodom Sihanouk and the older generation of Chinese rulers is a precious asset to both peoples. She thanked China for the hospitality and thoughtful arrangements for the control and recovery of King Norodom Sihamoni and Queen Mother Monineath in China. During the successful visit of State Councilor Wang Yi to Cambodia recently, several cooperation documents were signed, representing further progress in building the Cambodia-China community of destiny. As a staunch friend of China, Cambodia will continue to provide unwavering support on matters of China’s core interests. Cambodia will assume the rotating ASEAN presidency next year and is ready to work with China to elevate ASEAN-China relations to a new level.
