Large 5.2 earthquake strikes near Benkulu, Bengkulu, Indonesia

Earthquake 5.2 June 20 04:12 (GMT +7)

Earthquake 5.2 June 20 04:12 (GMT +7)

The Indonesian Meteorological, Climatological and Geophysical Agency reported a 5.2 magnitude earthquake in Indonesia near Benkulu, Bengkulu, just 15 minutes ago. The earthquake struck early in the morning of Sunday, June 20, 2021 at 4:12 a.m. local time at a shallow depth of 11 km. The exact magnitude, epicenter and depth of the quake could be revised in the coming hours or minutes when seismologists review the data and refine their calculations, or when other agencies release their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the German Research Center for Geosciences (GFZ) which listed the 5.3 magnitude earthquake. A third agency, the Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC), reported the same 5.3 magnitude earthquake.
Based on preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused significant damage, but was likely felt by many as a slight vibration in the epicenter area.
Weak tremors could have been felt in Benkulu (pop. 309,700) located 109 km from the epicenter, and Pagar Alam (pop. 70,400) at 114 km.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update the magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant earthquake news becomes available.
