The Indonesian Meteorological, Climatological and Geophysical Agency reported a magnitude 5.1 earthquake in Indonesia near Blitar in eastern Java just 12 minutes ago. The earthquake struck on the morning of Friday, October 22, 2021 at 9:21 a.m. local time at an intermediate depth of 98 km. The exact magnitude, epicenter and depth of the quake could be revised in the coming hours or minutes, as seismologists review the data and refine their calculations, or when other agencies release their report.
A second report was later released by the German Research Center for Geosciences (GFZ), which classified it as a 5.0 magnitude earthquake. A third agency, the Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC), reported the same 5.3 magnitude earthquake.
Based on preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused significant damage, but was likely felt by many as a slight vibration in the epicenter area.
