Kirkstall Abbey hosts Leeds Mindfulness Festival

The Leeds Mindfulness Festival is set to return to Kirkstall Abbey this weekend.

The festival runs from October 11 to October 22, 2021 with a mix of online and in-person sessions at Kirkstall Abbey. It is organized in collaboration with Leeds Center for Mindfulness, Wellness and Spirituality.

All events must be booked in advance and are Pay As You Feel (PAYF).

All in-person sessions take place in the Rose Room, Kirkstall Abbey Visitor Center, unless otherwise specified. Reservation is essential and the links to each session are below.

Anyone who is not exempt is requested to wear a face cover in confined spaces. This is the recommended government guideline, but it is not mandatory. Due to the need to keep the spaces well ventilated, participants are requested to bring warm clothing.

Oct 12: 2:45 p.m. to 3:45 p.m. – Jewish spirituality, meditation and mindfulness
With Gillian Holding, from the Progressive Jewish Community of Sinai Synagogue in Leeds. An introduction to Jewish meditation and its continued contemporary relevance to self-awareness and self-improvement practices within the Jewish tradition.

Oct 13: 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. – The Universal Message of Guru Nanak Dev Ji
With Charndeep Singh (The Basics of Sikhi). A brief introduction to the Sikh faith, meditation and loving devotion to the Divine. We will explore how the principles of Guru Nanak Dev Ji can be applied today and how meditation plays a fundamental role in the health and well-being of all mankind. Oct 14: 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. – Imago Divina
A reflective approach to spending time with a painting, drawing on mindfulness and Christian meditation techniques This session will include an introductory talk and hands-on exercises focusing on works by Rembrandt, Rublev, Craigie Aitchison, Bernardo Daddi and others. Led by Reverend Nigel Sinclair, Rector of the Abbey Lands Team.

Oct 14: 2:45 p.m.-3:45 p.m. Return to the World: Exploring Resilience
With David Keogh (Mindful journeys) and self-compassion with Steve Hart. During this session, David Keogh of Mindful Journey UK will host a space for reflection to examine the traits and limitations of resilience, the application of mindfulness-based practice in self-acceptance and decision-making. to return to “intrinsic strength”. David has 20 years of lived and professional experience in psychologically informed environments and high intensity service delivery.

Oct 16: 11 am-2pm Mini retreat to strengthen positive emotions
With Steve Hart from Leeds Center for Mindfulness, Wellness and Spirituality. A chance to unwind, unwind and radiate caring, empathetic happiness, compassion and equanimity with guided meditation practice and short sharings. Tea and coffee provided.

Oct 19: 12 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. Walk at Kirkstall Abbey with Clare Wigzell (outdoor event)
Clare Wigzell is a local poet who writes about her experiences walking in the landscape where she lives. During this event, she will read poetry in various places around the abbey and its park. These will include excerpts from a long poem and shorter poems in locations painted by JMW Turner. There will be walks between sites close to each other, then short readings. Clare hopes that all participants will deepen their relationship with the abbey and its grounds. Meet at the entrance to the Kirkstall Visitor Center.

Oct 19: 2:45 p.m.-3:45 p.m. Compassion as a force for transformation in society
With David Midgeley (Jamyang & Schumaker North Buddhist Center). Compassion is universally recognized as one of the central values ​​in all the major religions of the world. However, its importance as a guiding principle of economic and social policy is only beginning to be widely recognized. Along with this, over the past 30 years there has been an exploration of research interest in the benefits of secular compassion training stimulated by the pioneering work of HH Daliai’s Mind & Life Institute. Oct 20: 2:45 p.m.-3:45 p.m. Vinyasa Slow Flow for all levels
With Harriet King (wild and free yoga). We will start with a short meditation to allow our minds to slow down and come in. We will then follow that up with a full body stretch and flow through traditional sun salutations and modified to build strength and flexibility (suitable for all abilities – rookie or pro welcome!). We will connect our breathing to our movements in order to feel calm and peaceful while training smoothly! See you soon on the mat!

Oct 21: 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. Mindfulness, the Earth Element and the Dakini Principle
With Zeenat Cameron (Insight for Well being). In this session of mindfulness and visualization, we will connect with the earthly qualities of grounding, security and inner abundance. As we cultivate these qualities, we will meet the Dakini of Earth, the visualized sacred female form of this level of wisdom that will guide us and connect us to these positive qualities of Earth. Represented as joyful female beings of light, dakinis dance freely in the space around them, symbolizing our inherent ability to move freely in the space of consciousness, wisdom and love that is our true nature. .

With Sahil Sefer Nur Warsi (Sufi Community Nur Ashki Jerrahi). Contrasting translations of the Quran while seeking beauty in the contemplative practices of Sufism will be an hour of beauty and insight into the Islamic spiritual universe.

Ann Jones (Cards or Die Board Gaming) hosts this mindfulness session with a selection of card and board games. Come and let Ann recommend or teach you a game in the beautiful Rose Room at Kirkstall Abbey.
